ROTATOR CUFF TEAR

Rotator Cuff Injury

The rotator cuff consists of a group of muscles and tendons that hold your shoulder in place. These muscles enable you to lift your arms and reach up.

A rotator cuff tear can happen if you fall on an outstretched hand. Or, sometimes, a tear may develop over time, as a result of overuse from repetitive motions.

Shoulder tendonitis develops when the muscles of the rotator cuff become inflamed. This also develops with the biceps tendon that connects to the rotator cuff becomes inflamed. Like other shoulder injuries, shoulder tendonitis can range in severity from mild to extremely severe.

Some common rotator cuff injury symptoms include:
  • Avoiding certain activities
  • Difficulty achieving a full range of shoulder motion
  • Pain or tenderness when you reach over your head
  • Progressive weakness in your shoulder
  • Pain in your shoulder that becomes more pronounced at night
  • Difficulty sleeping on one shoulder

At Pain Relief Center, we offer several treatment options to help relieve rotator cuff pain. A few of these include:

  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications
  • Temporary activity modification
  • Physical therapy to work on range of motion and light rotator cuff conditioning
  • Corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation
The pain from a minor rotator cuff injury often diminishes on its own, with proper care and physical therapy.   In some cases, we can use alternative therapies, such as stem cell therapy. This treatment recovery lasts around 1-2 days before a patient can return to work. Combining the regenerative techniques of stem cells, along with physical therapy has shown to be a powerful technique when it comes to improving rotator cuff tears.

Rotator Cuff Exercises to Avoid

If you’ve experienced a shoulder-related injury, you’ve probably read up on exercises that can help you recover faster. However, there are several shoulder impingement exercises that you should avoid, as well.

  • Lifting weights above your head
  • Behind the neck pulldown
  • Upright row
  • Behind the neck press
  • Bench dips
