Aerobic activity allows the body to burn more calories due to the body’s power sources created over time as a result of increased activity. Organelles called mitochondria convert the body’s resources into adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, which serves as energy for the body. With increased physical activity, the body will naturally call for more energy, causing more mitochondria to form and produce more energy. Because the additional energy from the increased amount of mitochondria pulls from the body’s calorie source, more calories are used up instead of being stored. If the number of calories being used exceeds the number consumed, weight loss results. The number of mitochondria in one’s body can fluctuate, with the body destroying and creating them based on the amount of energy it currently needs. Therefore, to keep up the increase in calorie burning, one must continually exercise to maintain a high number of mitochondria.

Aerobic activity can take care of burning the fat, but one must workout his or her muscles, strengthening and sculpting one’s body and, as a result, burning even more calories for weight loss. Muscles can eliminate fat even while it is inactive; while adipose tissue, or fat, uses no energy to rest, skeletal muscle tissue, or muscles, uses energy even while you are sitting. Therefore, the stronger and more developed muscles become, the more energy they can use. Those training with weights should not be reluctant to push themselves to lift stronger weights. With light repetitive reps, one’s muscles will reach a certain state and remain; safely and reasonably increasing the amount of weight lifted will allow muscles to grow. While aerobic exercises and weight training boost weight loss, other supplemental activities can benefit as well. Sports remains one of the most popular ways to have fun and be active. Whether one plays traditional sports, like baseball or tennis, or competes in nontraditional sports, like paintball or parkour, physical activity can sometimes replace aerobic workouts and, over time, can result in weight loss.
